Designed to divide a room, the shoji screen is both a practical and artistic piece of furniture that’s often found in Japanese homes. It was a shoji screen that served as the inspiration for this bookcase. Designed to be very open, this piece is as at home in the center of the room as it is against a wall.. Kumiko are the thin pieces of wood that make up the standard grid of a shoji screen. In addition to the linear grid-work, decorative patterns can be fit within the grid to accent the design and add interest. Shown here are a few of the decorative patterns that have been used on Big Sand Woodworking projects.. Shoji screens are clean and simple wooden frames that have insert panels that lets the light through but maintains privacy. The center panel is given strength by the addition of fine lattice (kumiko) which is woven into a geometric pattern..
